Animals have been popular carving
subjects for many years. Animal carving offers great
opportunities for mastering the challenges of working in three
dimension. Woodcarving is an experience that goes far beyond
just shaping a piece of wood. Each piece of wood has a distinct beauty and
individuality. The various patterns in different pieces of wood
can make a plain carving very interesting. |

These carvings were finished with
a clear lacquer to bring out the grain patterns and natural beauty of
the wood. They were
lightly waxed and buffed to a soft sheen. The falcon was carved from a
block of butternut, the horse on the left from mahogany, and the horse
below from a block of cherry. |

Basswood is a very popular
wood for carving. This kitten was carved from one piece of
basswood. The grain is soft and easily sands to a smooth
finish. |

For a more realistic look, wood burning
techniques are used. The feathers on the owl and the duck were "burned" in to the wood to produce a much more realistic
looking carving.
